Nestled in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, Engineer Pass offers a thrilling off-road adventure through some of Colorado’s most breathtaking landscapes. This 20-mile trail is part of the world-famous Alpine Loop, taking visitors on a scenic journey from Ouray to Lake City, Colorado.
As you travel through Engineer Pass, you will find yourself immersed in a world of natural wonders. The trail winds its way through stunning meadows filled with wildflowers, past waterfalls, and remnants of old mining sites, before reaching the Alpine Tundra above treeline. With a high point reaching 12,800 feet, you are assured some truly unique and spectacular views from the top.
While the trail is open from late June until late September, the best time to visit Engineer Pass is in August when the wildflowers are in full bloom at high elevations. Due to the snowpack that lasts well into summer and begins again early in fall, this is the only time when the trail is accessible to visitors.
If you’re up for more adventure, combine Engineer Pass with other destinations in the area, including Imogene Pass or Yankee Boy Basin,. It also works well with some of our Fall Color tour options.
Exploring Engineer Pass is a bucket-list adventure for anyone who loves the great outdoors. This trail offers breathtaking views, unique natural wonders, and a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. So, pack your bags, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready to explore the beauty of Colorado’s Alpine Loop.
