Fisher Towers, Utah

The Fisher Towers are a group of towering sandstone pinnacles located in Utah, USA. These magnificent rock formations are a popular destination for rock climbers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts.

The History of Fisher Towers

The Fisher Towers are named after a miner named Fisher, who prospected for uranium in the area in the 1950s. Before this, the towers were known as “The Cathedral Group.” The Fisher Towers were designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1984.

The Fisher Towers themselves are believed to be between 245 and 286 million years old, and they were formed by the same geological processes that created the nearby Arches National Park. The towers are composed of Entrada Sandstone, which was deposited during the Jurassic period, and is approximately 2000 feet thick in this area.

The towers are free-standing and not connected to any cliff face, making them a popular destination for rock climbers.

The best time of year to visit the Fisher Towers is in the spring and fall when the weather is mild. Summer temperatures in the area can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 100°F. Winter weather can be unpredictable and may make the area difficult to access.

The best time of day to view the towers is in the early evening when the sun is setting (approx 2 hrs prior). This provides the best lighting for photographs and also allows visitors to witness the colors of the towers change as the sun sets. Note that the towers do not receive any morning light due to the rock backdrop that blocks light from that direction.
