Nestled between downtown Denver and the Denver International Airport is the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), a protected prairie and grassland spanning nearly 17,000 acres. While it may not be the first place that comes to mind for a photography tour, the refuge is actually one of the largest urban wildlife refuges in the United States, offering a unique and rewarding experience for photographers.
Check out our tour video to see what it’s like.
The proximity of the refuge to Denver makes it an ideal location for short yet productive photography tours, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. While the overall scenery may seem sparse at first glance, a closer look reveals a stunning array of wildlife and insects that make for excellent photography subjects.
The refuge is home to over 330 species of birds, making it a haven for birdwatchers and bird photographers alike. Among the birds that can be found here are hawks, eagles, owls, and a variety of waterfowl. The refuge also offers an ideal habitat for insects such as butterflies and dragonflies, which can be captured up close with a macro lens.
In addition to birds and insects, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR is also home to a variety of larger wildlife that can make for excellent photography subjects. Bison, deer, coyotes, and prairie dogs are just a few of the animals that can be spotted throughout the refuge. With patience and a bit of luck, photographers may even catch a glimpse of a bald eagle or a herd of bison.
